Is there any way of finding out the wifes name in a marriage without sending for the certificate My ancestor Matthew English married Mary Ann ? Jul/Sept quarter 1853 Tynemouth, Northumberland ref 10b 219. I am trawling through the pages on ancestry alphabetically to try and find Mary Ann but it is going to take forever thanks judith |

You could see if the marriage is on www.familysearch.org Or you can find Mary Ann under her married name on a census and then go back to see if you can find a Mary Ann of the right age born in the same place on a previous census. But with a name like Mary Ann you might be in for a looonnnng search. nell |

If it's not transcribed by FreeBMD, then have you got a birth place and year for her?? You could try looking for all the Mary's on the 1851 census with the same year (one or two each way!) and place of birth ....and draw up a shortlist of names to try....... Merry |

Just to say thanks for the advice, I made a list of all the mary ann's from the 1851 census born between 1825 and 1835 and have looked them up and found what I was looking for {mary Ann Robson} This is an excellent piece of advice for anyone else looking for a partner in a marriage and I also didnt know you could search the census with just christian names Thanks again Judith |
