My 2xgrt grandad is recorded on the 1861 census as living at home with parents and siblings, and at the same time a few streets away with a married women living as man and wife (he later married her )with her child from marridge and one from there union. Her husband is still living at the same address that is on there childs b c.Is't life complicated. Gill |

The Victorians were no more moral than any other age - just more hypocritical. There were regular scandals - Prince of Wales was named in a divorce suit, child prostitution was rife, but a nice veneer kept over it. In reality, I am sure that people had sex just as they do now - some within wedlock, some before marriage, some with people other than their spouses, illegitimate children were born. Without sex, we would have died out after the Victorians. nell |
