Oh, Jools, sorry, I didn't see your question before. Unfortunately I don't know what county Grace was born in. My best guess would be Somerset, but I have nothing on her birth. Kate.

Merry, that Henry is the son of John, isn't he? I am certain they must be related to mine but I haven't got any proof yet. (And I think John is listed as John Glass on the 1841 but not certain.) My best guess is that John was the brother of Grace's husband Henry. I was trying not to mention Henry's name because he has a rich doppelganger who confuses the issue! My Henry senior was definitely dead before 1841 (he died in 1835) and was a lath render or 'chairperson' which I think means he made chairs and as far as I can remember from the censuses I have found John on ages ago he has the same occupations. Thanks for your interest! Kate.

It's a very rare name, Glascodine being a more common version. My granny told me that the double s version had died out but I think there are still a few around. I am tempted to do a proper one-name study of it one of these days. I have my own Glasscodine message board on ancestry and nobody has ever posted anything on it (boohoo). I've even tried the dreaded 'ranked search' on ancestry for this lot, and nothing! I was really hoping they would turn up on ancestry's 1841 because I had already failed to find them in Somerset, Kent and London on other 1841 sites. Kate.

Is Henry Glasscodine who was born in Bath in 1847 to do with your lot?? I just wondered who his father was, as I might have expected him in Somerset in 1841????? Merry

Jools, I know the date when the census took place but it is so frustrating that they moved away so quickly! Kate.

To make it easier reading. My 4xg-grandmother Grace GLASSCODINE died in 1848 age 56 (maiden name Portman) in Tenterden, Kent. Her daughter Sarah died on the 11th May 1841 at 8 Arundel Place, Lansdown, Bath, Somerset (parish of Walcot). Grace registered the death on the 13th May 1841 giving the same address. (She was already widowed by then.) But I have searched right through Arundel Place on the 1841 census and there is no sign of her! Her surviving children all born in Bath were Mary, born 1816, who married William Farmer in 1836, (Mary's son Henry Farmer born 1837 Bath), Charlotte born 1818 who I have found on the 1841 living in as a servant in Bath, Henry born 1823 and Susannah born 1825. Some of them later moved to London, so I would hope to find them in either Bath, Kent, or London, but I have had no luck so far with any of them except Charlotte. (I have most of them on the other censuses and am only looking for help with the 1841.) Kate.
