I hope someone can help me with unravelling part of my tree! I have this man on the 1851 census: George Maynard abt 1762 Ashton, Hertfordshire, England Head Niton (Isle of Wight) Hampshire (another of my long-lived relations!!) Anyway.....he has been away from Hertfordshire for several decades....... Where's this place of birth - Ashton?? A clue may be that his father was said to live at Cottered, Hertfordshire..... Fingers crossed that someone has the answer! Happy Hunting Merry

Hi Merry I don't know about Ashton, but there is a place called Aston,it now tags onto Stevenage and lies roughly SouthWest of Cottered about 8 miles away. Glen

On a modern map look for Junction 7 of the A1M,then look about two miles east of the junction. It's roughly at the 4o'clock position in relation to Stevenage. Glen

I also have 30 or so county maps (more use on here most of the time though). It comes under the SG2 postcode as well, all of about eight or nine streets and a Primary School. Glen
