Sorry to ask a dumb question but having now found hubbys rellie on the death list for the Titanic - where would the death certs be registered? He was most likely Irish born - so bit of a dead end looking backwards but would the death cert be on the deaths at sea on 1837 please? |

Yep tried that - but doesnt say where the deaths would be registered. Im not up on this, I mean were they nearer US then England so is it the nearest country you have deaths registered? |

Thats interesting, think Ive just worked out whose his father, (isnt it awful how you dont bother with your OH side! The whole family of Gordons plus some rellies from Ireland show up in Liverpool area and the father, Hugh is shown as a 'fireman, seas, at home' So if he were a fireman (another name for stoker) it would follow a son may become a trimmer - i.e. stokers labourer. Only guessing at this being right lot though, they seem to be all over the place in Liverpool docks area. Oh but where do I find a death cert and in fact, would this be ages after because an inquest would be held? No Titanic experts about today? |

I don't KNOW .. but ...... wasn't there a rule, something about people missing at sea, having to have been missing for a certain length of time BEFORE any death cert could be issued ? ... I may be totally wrong on this, and I have never had to deal with it, so just trying to remember what may have been mentioned before ... Hopefully, this will jog someone's memory who does know !! Elaine ;-) |

Just a thought Heather, but if there were death certs issued -eventually- maybe they would be issued in the country of origin of the shipping company. In this case the US? Rebs x |

I don`t know the anwser to this one but i have found that your local register office or archives at the libary would be of help in this. I am only guessing though. These places have helped with some of my rellies when i was not sure which town, city etc to get certificates from. Give them a call. you never know!! Vanessa |

Many thanks guys. I would have thought they may have to wait a few years because otherwise someone could fake a death I suppose - though these poor devils wouldnt have insurance to cash in on. I remember someone telling me that the company stopped the wages of the crew on the day the ship sunk. No compo for widows. The crew would be Merchant Navy, wouldnt they -- hmmmmm......... Oh well, I will find out eventually I guess and order it. |
