Variation in spelling of names

If you have a surname that could be spelt in a few different ways, what do you put the name down as in your tree? I may possibly have acquired a new name, but far I have three different versions of it - Peginton, Pagenton or Paginton, and I'm sure with various combinations of a's, e's and i's could be a few more! What do I do - what would you do? Thanks Lisa

search by first name, dob and pob and/or make use of * after first 3 letters of surname

Hi Ken I was just wondering which spelling to go with for tree purposes. I have a brief note in a census transcription as Peginton, a kind person on here found them as Pagenton, the IGI has a few Pagintons. L

ah sorry in that case I would pick one use it throughout and make note of any variation. I have done this with my Horn's, (Horne and Hoorn)

Hi Ken Think I might go with the census entry - seeing as its official! However have a childs birth cert to get to confirm this name - bet it will either have a different spelling, or be a completely different person! Thanks lisa

Hi Lisa For the purpose of my tree on here I have used all 3 spellings on one line........Hushcorft, Hutchcroft and Uscroft. That means that when I look at My Tree Matches on here, all new names added for all 3 surnames will show up Jeanette x

I tend to use the name a child was born/baptised with as it was 'true at the time'. GR does not have a problem with children's surnames being different to their parents. Hot matches link to exact surnames, so you will miss anyone who is using a different variant. Name search does include variants, but usually keeping the same initial vowel: it might pick up Paginton and Pagington but not Peginton. Tree matches and new names alert are also based on exact names, so I would tend towards using different variants so that I am aware of new researchers and they are aware of me.

I've only got the one at the mo, need to get a birth cert to confirm. IGI also has Pagington. Why couldn't she have been Smith or Jones?! (only joking) L

I have just used the one that occurs most often. I think the searches on here are soundex anyway so it should find all possibles. If there is no soundex, anyone who has a name that can be spelt lots of different ways will check all possibles. I know I do.
