I have had FTM 2005 for a while now. Until yesterday, when I wanted to see a kinship report, I just went into the reports drop down menu and clicked on Kinship report and it would come up. Now when I do that I get a pop-up saying: 'Family Tree Maker 2005 is unable to use the default printer. Please go to the Printers option in the Windows Control Panel and select an appropriate default printer.' The report itself does not come up. I have never had this problem before and it is driving me mad. Any ideas anyone? Liz UPDATE: In fact it happens when I click on any report, tree view or pedigree view. |

No idea why its doing that Liz. Have you changed any printer settings lately? It seems to think you want to print when you dont? Why not give ancestry familytree technical a quick email - click the help tab. |

You need a printer installed before FTM can show a tree or report of any sort. FTM installs a default printer anyway, the printer does not have to be connected the the actual computer. Go into your printers folder and make sure you have a printer set as default, then restart your PC, everything should be okay then. Ron www.genealogyprinters*com |

Thank you for your responses. I have four printers installed in my printers folder, including the FTM one. There is one selected as default. None of them are connected to my laptop at present, but then they haven't been before (unless I am actually trying to print something). It is most peculiar. Liz |

Ahhh - breakthrough! I have now selected the FTM printer as default, and it seems to have worked. I will have to remember this when I next try to print something though lol. I wonder why this has only just happened? Thanks again, Liz x |

Can never tell Liz can you. I often wonder when I go to bed if my puter starts chatting to puters all over the world and decides to change settings itself! |

You should not have to select the FTM printer as the default to get FTM to work properley, any printer selected as default will or should do. FTM installs it's own printer so that it can use that one (whether it's set to default or not) for creating PDF files. There are 7 printers installed on the system I'm on now and FTM will work with any of them set as default. Ron www.genealogyprinters*com |
