my dads family just stops ???

Can anyone help me, im stuck i have found dads father and grandfather, ggrandfather but i cannot find anyone any further than 1881 census, what am i doing wrong ? They just disappear !! i have tried many searches but im just not getting anywhere, can anyone point me in the right direction please !!!! Jackie |

Edwin William Mcgowan is my starting point 1900 rochester 1901 william mcgowan lodger 28 rochester 1873 1891 william mcgowan son 17 rochester 1874 - head thomas mcgowan 49 rochester 1842 1881 Thomas mcgowan head 37 rochester 1842 then nothing, ive searched on thomas wife, elizabeth on the 1871 but nothing, nothing for thomas would appreciate some advise where to / how to look further not had any trouble with any other family ive looked up, just the mcgowan family and thats why i started all this - typical thanks in advance |

Thanks ozibird, thats been such a help, where do you look for christenings ? is that another site ? i cant get over how different all the spellings can be, ive had some slightly different spellings on other searches but the variations on McGowan has been terrible Thanks to all of your tips and pointing me in the right direction, what a wonderful bunch you are !!! |
