I could do with a new set of eyes please to help me find this family on the 1841 census. I'm hoping they're there but badly mistranscribed because I can't seem to find them. See below in a mo. Helenx |

In 1851 they were living in Tranmere Cheshire: Joseph Hallowes Head 33 Stockton Quay, Warrington Mary Hallowes Wife 32 Llamymemn(?), Montgomeryshire John Hallowes Son 11 Newtown, Montgomeryshire In all later official documents John appears as John Ingram Hallows. Ingram is his Mother’s maiden name. I haven’t got them on the 1861 census because sometime between 1851 and 1861 John went to Australia where he married and had children. Joseph just seems to disappear and Mary doesn’t appear again until the 1871 census where she is down as a widow. I’ve checked the 1841 census for both England and Wales as John’s birthplace is given as Newtown, Wales and he was born in c.1840. Unfortunately John’s birthplace changes regularly between Newtown, Liverpool, Shrewsbury and Seacoombe, Cheshire and I haven’t been able to find his birth in the GRO registers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Helenx |

Thank you Suzanne, that's fantastic. It certainly looks like Mary in 1841 and the marriage in 1843 must be them. It looks like I've got John's age wrong, or rather he was economical with the truth when he got married, because he doesn't seem to be with Mary in 1841. I shall have to go back to the GRO registers and have a look for him a bit later. Helenx |
