Can anyone suggest where I can find free Gedcom software please? A lovely lady emailed me the web address but I moved house and lost the paper with it written on, very unlike me. Once it's installed, is it self-explanatory? Thanks.

Gedcom is just a way of transporting genealogy from one lot of software to another, so you will need a software program to open it in. I think GR automatically exports in gedcom. nell

The Latter Day Saints do a free program 'Personal Ancestral File' which will read GEDCOM files, although I'm not certain whether it will then export, so you should check before you get too carried away with it. You can download it free from their website www.familysearch.org, but it is rather large so I wouldn't recommend it if you are on dial-up.

Yes, I use paf. Free download from LDS and you can import/export it using gedcom. Think of paf/family history maker etc as the shopping and gedcom as the bag that transports it! nell
