Hi there! I've left a 'trying to find' posting but not sure it'll work as I don't know much info on it. Is there anyway I can find out who/where my grandfather's illegitimate children are?? All I have to go on are his details and whre he was posted as a policeman (very likely to be these places!) We know through the family that there are others belonging to him but no one knows who/how/what/why/where etc. Is it possible to look up births by the father's name(providing it was put on certificate)??? I'm new to all this so not sure how it works. Is there a register somewhere for people trying to find parents etc??? I've looked through all the trying to finds that might be 'possible matches' but no luck. How would I go about starting this search given the small amount of info I have??? |

You search for births under the surname given to the child. So if the children took the Fathers surname then this is where you search. All entries in the indexes have the Mothers Maiden name against them ... if the birth took place Sept 1911 or after. You need to know when to start searching and use the above info whilst trawling every qtr of every year. Once you find one entry ... then skip the next 3 qtrs ... save some time ! Good Luck Elaine ;-) |

ok so if they were born sometime between 1940 & 1949-ish and assuming they took their father's surname as I know he never married the mother(s) he only married my mum's mum, I'd be looking for someone by ...(surname)......but what if the mother(s) left the areas he was in to go and give birth elsewhere to save any family shame etc?? Where on earth do I begin??? I have a feeling that they may have been daughters which makes it a bit harder if they were married now and changed their names and also likewise if they were given up for adoption.....this is why firstly i thought i had heaps of info but now it's just a drop in the oecean of possibilites...........eeeek!!! We were lucky a few years back when a sibling of my mother's came forward but they had always been told who their father was so that was easy! And the same goes for the other sibling a few years before that....but we know there are another 2 somewhere it's just where that's the problem. Any other/more ideas would be fab!!! |

Children are normally registered under mother's surname if they are illegitimate, unless mother pretends she is married, of course. How do you know about these illegitimate children - did your grandfather pay maintenance for them? nell |

No he never paid maintenance as far as I know....but a member of the family who recently passed away said he had 5 children altogether and get looking!! We've got mum, her sister and her brother so far but 2 more to find I've got the impression but not sure where from that the other two were daughters. It's a shame coz mum really wants to find them but a lot of lving relatives won't say anything for fear of causing problems so i've stopped asking family and started to look on my own in case they are out there looking for my granfather or my mum etc. Reckon they would be about 55-65yrs old-ish now. I know there's a chance they were never told anything about their father nor that they want to know but if we at least knew who/where they were it'd give mum some piece of mind. :-))) |

1) Facts -what are they?.....anything known about his location in this period?.... 2)The children than are known-you say your mother was theonly one that was born in marriage .The other 2 -were they registered with the mothers surname or fathers surname? 3) What evidence that there were 5 ? or what sex they were? 4)The two that are already known in addition to your mother- is there a pattern to their births= ie time of year, space between?,are they born of seperate mothers ?.....is thereasimilarity in stories from these two?... If you want you can fill me in by pm as these people are living and I'll have a look at what may be possible. |

Anna, did all this happen in Scotland? If so you wont find any records on the free Eng./Wales sites. Scotland have their own records on Scotlands people It is a pay per view site and you have to buy credits, This could be expensive if you dont have a lot of info. If you are near Edingburgh, call in or give them a ring and they will help you. Sylvia. |
