Can anyone please tell me where microfiche of the parish records for Poplar and West Ham are held for the 1890 to 1910 period (I've emailed the Walthamstow Museum peeps and they're on holiday !) Thanks |

Almost certainly they will be at the London Metropolitan Archives. I expect there are transcripts at the East of London Family History Society too. nell |

Heidi, Poplar parish records are held at the London Metropolitan Archives in London and West Ham are held at the Essex Record Office in Chelmsford. Walthamstow Museum won't hold either of the above parish records. Jean x. |

Hi I have recently had the parish records out for 5 churches in West Ham (the Canning Town area) Holy Trinity, St Gabriels, St Cedd's, St Mathias and St Andrews Plaistow. I ordered these from my local LDS. They took about 2 weeks to arrive, and cost £2.70. You have the films for a month, but you can extend the time. It took a few months to go through them, as St Andrews and Holy Trinity had 3 films each, so when I was getting to the end of the last film, I ordered the next. The only church that the LDS hasn't filmed in that area, and that unfortunatly is the one I desperately need, is St Lukes, Victoria Dock. I will need to make the trip up to Chelmsford for that one. The LDS has quite a few films for the churches in Poplar (where I was born) There is also a brilliant website with parish records online called www*parishregister*com remove the * and repace with a dot. They do make a modest charge for downloading the records, but if you are lucky, you can get a few baptisms for the same price. My Nan (born 1889) was baptised in St Peters Limehouse, with three of her sisters, so when I ordered hers, I got the three other sisters too. Sandra |

Sandra you little darling, lots of my family were in the St. Lukes area, in fact my parents were married there and I was christened there, and would you believe it, I live a few miles from Chelmsford, so I will go ASAP. Thanks for that info Kathlyn |

Kathlyn you lucky thing. I live in Hampshire, which is not too far but by the time I catch a train up there etc, I will probably only have enough time to read through about 5 years. So I would have to go a few times. what with work, kids, money etc it'll be quite hard to arrange. I have just thought, I wonder if the Newham Archives and Local Studies Library at Stratford have got the film in? as it will only take me about an hour and a half to get up there. I'll email them now before I forget, and ask. Sandra update - Monday morning. I just had a reply back from Stratford, and no they haven't got St Lukes there. Looks like I'll have to get up to Chelmsford one day. |
