I have an Ellen Day-Smith born Q2 1888 in Poplar (Middlesex/London) 1c 558, I can't find her marrying or dying on the Ancestry FreeBMD, but neither can I find her on the 1891 or 1901 census. There are not many of this name at all, although it looks likely her brothers (?) died at birth (1883 + 1890). I do not know of any siblings or the parents names. Can anyone help please?

Freebmd isn't complete - you'd need to check the actual GRO index images - also on ancestry, every quarter of each year between the censuses. I'll have a shufti on the census for you to see if she's been mistranscribed. nell

No Day-Smiths at all on the censuses any year. How did you find Ellen - what is your connection with the family? nell

Hi Helen, I have Day-Smiths in my line, but it's all a bit of a mystery as the name was 'created'. However, this Ellen and her 'brothers' appear before my latest reckoning of when the name first turned up, which is already a generation before the family said it did. Previously the family were most likely Smith's (from census), except for this one ......?

Teresa - HOW ON EARTH DID YOU MANAGE THAT ???!!! Wow ! And wow again. That has now totally thrown me, and I'm completely befuddled as to how or even if that fits in with my tree. Thanks ever so much, that's definately given me something to chew on ! Cheers :-)

Teresa is a bit of a whizz isn't she. Looks like Ellen at least survived. nell
