I found my grt grandmother on the 1901 census with the children but no husband even though she was done as married, i needed his name to make sure i was following the correct family this time. Just found my grt grandfather he must have been on nights when the census was taken hes put his address as Henwick signal Box, he worked on GWR. is his house is only just down the road from where he worked |

Finding any John Smith is no laughing matter! Glad you found him. I have a gt X 2 grandfather who is awol in 1841 and 1851 and then had the nerve to die in 1858, so I haven't got him on any census!!!! nell |

Nell, my husband is a Smith & I thought we were doing really well as we managed to get this line back ..... to a John Smith born 1848, with a father also named John Smith (DOH! ). I have been having real problems finding a matching birth certificate, partly because his dad married at least twice, the second time in 1850. ( So had been waiting for the 1841 to try to shed some light on a possible mother) When I related all the problems to MIL she told me there was an old family story that 2x gt grandfather was actually adopted. I don't know whether to be peeved or relieved - he's not really a Smith at all! |

It's great to sort out your Smiths isn't it? My hubby's grandparents were Walter Smith who married Ethel........yes, you've guessed, Smith, so I've had to do it twice over. Ethels Dad was a railwayman and the family moved all over where his work took him so they took quite a bit of tracing, I'm still missing a few siblings. Luckily Walter's family stayed in the same area but there were an awful lot of Johns and Thomas's. |
