Annoying isn't it. You won't be the first person to have done this - and you won't be the last :)) |

Im so annoyed with myself for not following the golden rules of family history by getting the certs first, My mum hasnt been much help as she didnt know her grandparents so isnt interested in tracing her roots. She decided to tell me last week my nan was buried with her parents so after a trip to the cemetary last sunday i was disappointed to find different names on the headstone to what i had. I sent off for my nans birth cert at the local office and her marriage cert at GRO, the registry office rang yesterday to say the names for her parents where different to what i had put down. Anyway i have started to trace the right family this time, and im doing it step by step and slowly arghhhhhhh |

Lol i dont expect i will be, i mean my nans name was Smith and their are loads of them lol so hopefully i can be excused all i did was add my nans name and her sisters name and then clicked on 1901 to find them realised today when i had checked my nan was born in june the 1901 census was done in march so she isnt on it!! and i was getting so attached to the other family as well lol |

Been there, done that :-) Hang on to the research you've already done though, you never know they may fit into your extended family somewhere |

I did it, and went a fair way back too. They were such a nice family (*sighs wistfully*), just a pity they weren't mine. Mandy :)) |

Karen, you have found out now at the beginning - think how you would feel if you found out when you were back to the 18th century. This does prove what we say over and over to people on here, you cant trust relatives memories, you cant believe dates and names are right without checking and checking and buying the certificates. There is no cheap and easy way to do this and you are so right to agree! Good luck now you are on the right line. |

Hi Heather, Yes Im glad i only got as far as 1840ish, my mum did give me names of my nans step brothers and sisters but as she didnt know when or where they were born i just concentrated on my nan and her sister whos date of birth i guessed and i was a year out, their younger brother wont be on the census until 1911 same as my nan, now i have to wait 5 yrs to see them on the 1911 census I did try to find a marriage for my nans parents but there are so many John Smiths i gave up, hopefully have my nans birth cert tomorrow and that should tell me Lilys maiden name |
