If it's a birth - Twins?? If it's a marriage, brother and sister married on same day to different people??

Rachel

Rachel Report 13 May 2006 19:35

they could be twins or they may be cousins (I have thins where the children are cousins) (twins tend to be on the same OR consecative pages)

ooh think you have got twins there Dawnie, if you order one of the certificates and its got a time on it........ then YES !!

Jools

Jools Report 13 May 2006 19:37

No they wouldn't be consecutive. the ref is volume (9b for example) then page (123 for example). There are at least 2 births to a page and sometimes 4, depends when they happened.

I transcribe for FreeBMD, and see this a lot, they have the same no. if twins not consequetive(?) if they are cousins perhaps, they would usually have different numbers, as registered seperate Jx

Don't forget that the references cover a three month period. If it's a registration district where not many people lived then the births on that page could have happened some time apart. With common surnames they may not be related at all, even with an uncommon surname they might be cousins rather than twins.

Merry Report 13 May 2006 20:23

As Judith points out, they don't have to be twins, but if they are....just to clarify.....they will generally have the same numbers, but can be one page number different. Imagine the registrar......he can fit a certain number of birth registrations on a page of records. Should the registrar only have one space left on his page, then one twin will go there and the other twin on the following page. In any other situation they will both be on the same page number.
