Im newbie to this game but can I just say someone tipped me off about FamilySearch.Org and I think its a brilliant site for looking up free BMD info. I have found out so much in the last few days. Most birth details for your ancestors give the parents name and some tell you who your person married so you can keep skipping back generations. Some details go back as far as the 1500's. Take a look its worth it. Just click on the search tab at top of their page and then click search for ancestors. Sarah

Sarah just a word of warning about the family search site, if the entry you find for your rellies is submitted by a member of the LDS church (it will tell you at the bottom of the entry) they can be prone to mistakes. If the entry has a batch number it means it was taken from a parish record & is more likely to be correct. It is a fantastic resource for family history but where possible double check your info. Good luck with your research. Georgina.

Sarah, this is a resource most of us use for the IGI - but as already said it is only reliable if it is extracted info - the submitted info can be wildly wrong as it is only placed on there by people doing their own family history. You can find mothers apparently giving birth at 65 or women marrying at 6 months - I believe someone on here had a man fathering children many years after his death. The best resource for you to use would be ancestry - it is a paid for site, but works out very little over the year and the info there is from census 1901-1841. You also get bmd index from 1837 - the date when registration first started. There are lots of other sites you can use - I will nudge up the tips for newbies.
