Hello all, does anyone know what it means if there is a hand written birth entry with a cross next to it for one year, then typed entry for the same name and place of birth the following year?? thanks |

My husband has a cross against his name on the birth index. He was originally registered with a one Christian name. Then his parents added another name (not sure when this was done) the correction is hand written at the bottom of the page. Not sure what you mean in the last part of your question by 'the following year' Cheers Gerry |

It does sound as though a correction has been made, but it seems strange that the new entry has been made in the following year because I have always believed that the entries were done on a regular quarterly basis and wouldn't expect there to be the leeway to make a mistake of a whole year. Perhaps somebody else may know better. Was it in wartime, perhaps there could have been a backlog then? |

The person I'm trying to find out about is Julia.M.Southgate in the birth index for Jul/Aug/Sep Quarter 1944 she is there, but next to her name is a cross and it say's 'see D45' So I looked at Dec 1945 and she is typed in there aswell, I was wondering if anyone else knows why she would be entered twice?? thanks very much p.s sorry I didn't explain myself clearly x |

If you look at Q3 1944 under the mum's maiden name, there is an entry there too. I would GUESS that the parents were not married at the time Julia was registered. so she was registered under the name Davies. Then either the parents married, or in any event the dad wanted to be included on the birth registration (maybe he was away in the war in 1944?)....so in 1945 the registration was made in the new surname. That was the entry I was talking about, yes maybe you'r right so would she have been born and hand written in 1944 with a forward date reference to Dec 1945, when she was printed in? (If I've explained myself!!) I thought it may have had something to do with adoption? thanks |
