Hello All, I am trying to find out any details about the life of one one my ancestors John Ellwood, prior to 1840 when he married for the second time to Margaret Richardson. I know in 1840 he was living in Smardale Westmorland & was a farmer from his marriage cert. I know he was baptised at St Michael's church Bongate, Applebly in 1807. All events between these dates are a mystery!! I cannot find his first marriage or anything else about him. Any ideas? Thanks, Gillian

If you get his birth certificate, that will give you his parents. With his parents, you can see if you can find their marriage and any other brothers or sisters.

do you have any children on 1841 that are too old to be 2nd wives..you could order their birth cert to find mothers name

I have his youngest sibling's baptism (Elizabeth Ellwood) in 1815 in Bongate. Unfortunately I have no children present from his first marriage in the 1841 census. If any exist, they must be elsewhere. I know the john Ellwood & Anne Bellas marriage is not my John as I have found them alive & well in 1851! I'll check out the other two. Thanks to all, Gillian

Hi Judy, Thanks for the baptisms. Maybe if I looked up the actual PR entries it might say where William and Anne lived. I have look for William and Anne in the 1841/51 census but I reckon they must have died before 1841. I am still no frther in finding John Ellwood's first marriage. Gillian
