Trying to verify the kinship of a witness on a marriage cert. dated 1918.Wanting to establish if witness 'George Hartley' would be my Great grandfather or my great uncle. Was there a legal age limit for witnesses to marriage in 1918? Great grandfather would have been approx 58 and great uncle somewhere between 14 and 17 years Any help would be appreciated Thanks Linda.

I don't think there was a legal age for witnesses. Certainly lots of people on GR have marriage certs where the witnesses are teenagers. nell

As long as the witness was old enough to understand what was going on then there was no age limit, so it could be either of your ancestors, although I would personally think it more likely to be the younger relative (but I know assuming anything is the last thing you should do!!) Kath. x

Thanks to the both of you, that's the way I was thinking, it looks like I'm going to dig out some info on the younger relative. Thanks again for the help & advice. Linda.
