Cleaning up headstones.....what is allowed, how do

I found a family headstone recently with several ancesters inscribed. The first date is 171?, the last one 1791. While I could decipher enough to be certain it was my family there was a good bit I couldn't get. Needless to say I'm quite convinced they are the bits that would open up new lines of enquiry! The problem is not so much that the lettering is worn away but grey and yellowish lichen obliterating it. The moss brushed away with a little gentle brushing but the lichen wouldn't budge. I did not want to do anything more drastic than gentle brushing, the last thing I want to be accused of is vandalism. So any advice about what is permitted, and any tips please. I will be able to visit the area again quite soon. Moira. |

Personally I'd try just brushing it with water and a toothbrush to start with and see whether that helps.... I wouldn't use any cleaning products as maybe against the rules of the cemetry.... or you could ask in the church what they recommend!! xx |

I had this problem a while back when I was visiting my ancestors and the curator who was in the graveyard at the time told me to use a wire brush and water and nothing else. Hope that is some use. |

I have used a wire brush before. This will clear a lot of the lichen, moss and weathering to reveal more information. hope this helps. Lorraine |

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll let you know how I get on, but it will be June/July before I can visit again. Cheers, Moira. |

You might have to check if it's in a nature conservation area - that might mean you aren't allowed to clear even lichen. Christine |
