Can anyone help please? Have relly born illegit early 20th century, have second birth certificate from adoption, and know mothers name, is it possible to find first certificate? Am hoping to find fathers name, or is that not possible? Any help would be much appriciated.

You would need to know their birth name. You might also need the DOB and POB. Once you have these, you can search the GRO register to find it. If the person was illegitimate, the father probably won't be named on the certificate.

How early in the 20thc are we talking? There was no legal adoption process prior to 1927. I do not understand the 2nd birth cert thing - following adoption, a child is entered onto the Adopted Children Register, and a certificate of adoption is issued. There is no further entry onto the birth register. Liz

This is a bit confusing as there were no official adoptions back at the turn of the century. Are you sure you have the right certificate - or is it for someone else? This person would only have had one. Kids were usually just taken in by relatives often the grandparents (and passed off as their children rather than grandchildren) or they took on the name of the man the mum married later on. (oH SORRY Liz, seems like I virtually duplicated your answer there)

If it is a ''short'' one, it is the original birth, but only shows part of the information. All you need do, is find the corresponding reference on the GRO index and you can get the full one.

I am sorry to add at now but I belive my grandad has the same thing, a relative has been looking into my family tree and found my grandad had two birth cert and was registered twice but she has been broken into so not seen one of them to check it but have ref for it. My relative said that as he was brought up by an aunt and uncle they registered him again about 6mnths after the 1st and it was at Kings Norton Birmingham and that's what happened then (1913) but don't have any more info tham that about it or where she found out that info. but just thought you might like to know this.
