Was it complusory when it first started in 1837 england and wales? I've search for my gg grandmother who was born about 1843-1845- have search right from 1837 to about 1850 and can't find her. I remember reading ages ago about it not being enforced when civil registration first happened.

It wasn't compulsory to register births and deaths until 1875 in Eng/Wales. Marriages should all be in the GRO indexes, because it wasn't down to the individual to register a marriage. However, there are mistakes and omissions in the indexes! Merry

My grandfather's youngest sister was born in 1937, yet they appear to have got away without registering her. Odd.
