Bloody Hell, I think I may have found them.......(sorry to swear!) I was thinking it seemed strange that none of the names you had given for the Cox/Miles children had come along before 1901, yet they were young and had been married a few years by then..... Now, remember Dolly?? I found a birth as Dorothy . As I said before, it might be wrong as there was no mother's maiden name in the index to help at that date. So, you mentioned they married in Hungerford District, but all the births I had looked at were in Reading - where we know they were by 1904, but we don't know they were there before that?? So, I looked at Cox births in Hungerford, 1896 onward. Not so many as in Reading district. This one stood out: Births Jun 1898 Cox Victoria Dorothy Hungerford 2c 269 Thought I should look for her on the census....... Now, for a moment, I thought they were the wrong family.....both parents apparently have the wrong first names, but....look at the inlaws in the house!! 1901 Albert J Cox abt 1876 Hoe Benham, Berkshire, England Head St Giles Berkshire Gertrude M Cox abt 1880 Hungerford, Berkshire, England Wife St Giles Berkshire Mary Ann Cox abt 1897 Hungerford, Berkshire, England Daughter St Giles Berkshire Victoria D Cox abt 1899 Hungerford, Berkshire, England Daughter St Giles Berkshire Mary Jane Hatchell abt 1873 Hoe Benham, Berkshire, England Visitor St Giles Berkshire Arthur Miles abt 1878 Hungerford, Berkshire, England Brother-in-law St Giles Berkshire George Miles abt 1881 Hungerford, Berkshire, England Brother-in-law St Giles Berkshire Lizzie Miles abt 1886 Hungerford, Berkshire, England Sister-in-law St Giles Berkshire What are they doing being Albert (acceptable mistake I suppose?) and GERTRUDE!!! LOL Going for a lie down...... Merry

I know I gave you Queenie's birth already (that's the only one I've given you so far that is almost definitely belonging to the right couple, as mother's name only started on the index in Q3 1911)..... Here are some more!! No Surname Forename (s) Mothers maiden name District Page No Event Quarter Year 1 Cox Hilda L Miles Guildford.2a 143 Birth 4 1919 2 Cox Miles R Miles Reading.2c 657 Birth 1 1916 3 Cox Phyllis Miles Reading.2c 701 Birth 3 1913 Merry

and 3) Who were their marriage witnesses? Merry

Merry Report 10 Feb 2006 17:04

Two things: 1) If we can't find Alfred and Mary in 1901, then we are stuck, as without knowing where he was born, he could be one of many Alfred John Cox' born about 1876, none of whom were born in Berkshire. 2) I've just looked to see who was living at 4 Brighton St in 1901. It was Oswald Athelstan, and army pensioner aged just 39, and his wife and young daughter. So, on the surface at least, nothing to do with your family :o(( Merry

Tell me about it! Everyone was a labourer of some sort in my family - nothing exciting anywhere! LOL They were living at 4 Brighton Road, Reading in 1904. Am going straight home to look through all my notes - I am really annoyed now - I have gone a few generations back on the MILES line - I have got the information from somewhere. But where?!?!? (Head in hand sobbing now!!) :-)

Karen Report 10 Feb 2006 14:48

Thanks again for these. At least I know that some of the information my nan shares is truth ! (bless her), and that there were likely 3 sisters. Shame they were all younger than my g grandmother - their certificates may have given me some information on what happened to them on the nights of all the censuses since their father was born! Mothers side, no problem.

Merry

Merry Report 10 Feb 2006 14:45

Have you found Mary Ann in 1901 or is she missing too?? Have you found her on any other census? Merry
