Hi Jinglebabs, I received your Gedcom A OK and successfully imported it into my LDS software. It was only a small gedcom about 48KB but there didn't seem to be anything wrong with it apart from the fact that there didn't seem to have many dates on it so unless the places you are trying to import it to are querying that aspect of it I don't know. For example, my people all have a birth year but when I looked at a few of your entries they didn't seem to have birth years - is this correct? Cheers, Horatia

Jinglebabs, I have sent you a PM with my hotmail e-mail address just to check your Gedcom over to see if it DEFINITELY is a gedcom. Cheers, Horatia

Jinglebabs, Then this is most peculiar. It sounds ike you are saving gedcoms and yet you can't do anything with them! Can't think why! The person who received that Gedcom should have been able to import it into their family tree software - was it that they didn't know HOW to do this rather than there being anything wrong with your file?! Cheers, Horatia

Horatio yes it says Ged at the end of file name and a tree with what looks like reddy branches on it; Babs

Jinglebabs, You didn't finish your message by the looks of it. The only way you can share genealogy files with people who don't use the same family tree programme as you do, is to export a gedcom file not a FTW file. It looks as though you keep exporting FTW files and not a gedcom otherwise it would work. I think it must go wrong when you name the file. It must say .ged at the end of the file. If it doesn't then it isn't a gedcom file. By the way, do you have your extensions showing so that you can see what type of files you are saving and sending. On my PC a gedcom looks like a tree because the software on my PC associated with gedcoms is Family Tree Maker Software. Are the file icons of the files you are trying to share with people little trees? Cheers, Horatia

Heather, Jingle Babs doesn't want to save the file to her PC because she wants to use Family Tree Maker 2006 and she is frightened it will overwrite her Gedcom so she wants to make a copy to a CD. Ok, I see you have seen that she wants to save it to CD. Cheers, Horatia

Did we go through this the other day or was that someone else? On FTM, open the program so you are looking at a page of your people. Click on file. Click on export. Click on export entire file (assuming thats what you want). Box comes up - give it a name with ged on the end. Go down to the next box and save as GED - I think its the last one on the list. It should then tell you you have saved and a little icon will come up probably on your worktop with FTmaker symbol.? Just reread your message. So you then want to save it to a cd? Get a rewritable cd if you are saving it for yourself and want to keep updating it, like I do. Click on file and click on back up. A little box comes up, click on save to writable cd and that should be it. Obviously bung your cd in the drive! It then goes through a back up and will tell you the info is saved and your cd will eject.

JingleBabs, If you had a floppy disc, we could have this done and dusted in two shakes. The only reason I can think that you are having problems is that you already have a gedcom on your PC and there is a message coming up asking if you want to over write the previous gedcom. Cheers, Horatia

Ahhh! So are you exporting from the LDS (Latter Day Saints) software or Family Tree Maker Software?Because I rather got the impression that we were talking about exporting from Family Tree Maker Software. They are two separate programmes; both of which I have on my PC but the exporting process is different for both of them. Let me know which you want to export from. Cheers, Horatia

Hi JingleBellsBabs, In the drop down box (Save As Type) there are TWO types of Gedcom. I am wondering if you are choosing the Dos type rather than the other Gedcom option. If you look at the software and attempt to export the Gedcom again, you will see what I am talking about. Cheers, Horatia
