Maybe it was empty in 1891? If Charles Richardson had bought it for him to live in with his new bride and then she died, he might have had it closed up for a time. I have found him in 1901 living with wife No 2 and with his in-laws at Leamington Priors Warwickshire. He remarried in 1892. He was supposed to have been born in Marylebone in 1854ish, but I still cannot find him in 1891. Maybe he had gone on a tour of Europe or something?? In 1901 he was living on own means. Merry - Time for bed!

Hi Jess If it is a 'Big House' then the family may be in London for the season, or travelling on the Continent. The children, if any, may be at Boarding school. In those circumstances, there may only be a housekeeper there, or just a couple at the lodge. Have you looked at any old directories, which would definitely give you the name of the owner/occupier at the time? You might then be able to trace them if they were 'away on the night of the census'.

Pete Report 26 Sep 2005 22:36

Just did a quick check of the Historical Directories website. According to the 1890 Kelly's H E SULLIVAN was resident. Henry E SULLIVAN (retired Indian civil service) and family are in Great Houghton but the name of their home is not included in the census return. I'll have a look at the enumerators desription and see if that helps. Pete
