If you know the name you were given at birth and the distrctyou should be able to find your original birth entry in the birth index, this will also give you the GRO reference to order the certificaye.

The cert will give you your mothers married name(s) as well as her maiden name.

The only alternatative is to contact the social services, as well as the details to order the cert (they don't supply it to you directly) they can also try and obtain your adoption file, this can be a long process though.

In my case my mother had been married twice and her second marriage was over 20 years before i came along. My birth cert gave me her current and previous married names along with her maiden name which helped search the index.

Hi Joanne how long after you were born were you adopted ?? If it was near enough straight away then maybe your birth mum wasnt able to register you under the name she wanted to call you. So the adoptive parents did this and this is the certificate you have now. There must be a record of your adoption with your birth mothers signature giving concent for the other people to adopt you. I think it is social services who you contact in the area you were born and they start the ball rolling to find your Adoption papers but it may take a while. Are you adoptive parents still living, i know its a sensative subject but maybe they or a family member knows her name. You need to have alook on the 1837 online at marriages a few years before you were born with the surname of the father you know married your birth mum and the area you were born in. Regards Colette xx

How do I find out my mother's maiden name from my original birth certificate. I was adopted soon after birth and only have my adopted certificate. My mother was married at the time of my birth and that is the only name I have for her
