I think it's a great site, but personally I don't like the data fields. It would be fine if we all precisely knew when our ancestors arrived and left the places, but few of us do. I guess I hate leaving so many blanks! LOL I had an base born ancestor by the name of Fountain Stevens. Unusual first name, eh? What should I find on Ancestral Villages but a family by the name of Fountain living in the same place at the same time. I now suspect he was named after his father. Without that website I would never have had a clue. Sharon

After seeing this thread, i thought i better add a bit more to it. It looks like people are slowly starting to add to it now. Let's hope this thread will prompt more people to add their own. Also if you have found a good site regarding one of the villages, why not add it to the NOTES section at the bottom for others to see. Sandra

The Ego Report 9 Aug 2005 11:47

yes, i thought the idea was very good, and would have loved to have seen it flourish.Imagine being in contact with direct descendants of the same family or neighbours even, swopping stories collated,as if youre bringing the village back to life again. Sadly,I'm the sole member of about 3 villages :-((

Anne - I've tried to add a couple of villages, you click on the contact button if I remember right, but they have never come up. And yes it is fast if you are looking at a village or town with only a few entries on but I DARE you to look at BRIGHTON Sussex, that is a snail on my pc!! JOsie

I have just visited and added a couple of relatives. It does not seem to matter if you don't know many of the details. There were only a couple of entries in each village. I found the site quite fast compared with G.R. The main problem I have is that my ancesters villages seem to be too small to be on the site. Is there any way you can add villages?

I found this site about a year ago and entered my entire tree [at that time] but like many of your was a bit concerned about putting my email address, although I did on a couple. One thing I found was with the amount of entries I put for Brighton, it took a really long time to get Brighton up [sadly our pc is old & slow]. I think they should have called it Ancestral towns & villages, as some people probably wouldn't look on it if their ancesters all came from large towns. Josie

I started quite a few of the villages on this site. I like the layout and find it helps to clear in my mind my relatives' lives and movements. I've never had a contact from anyone, but I think if we are patient it will grow. Eventually it could be a great way of getting a local history, to add interest to the 10-yearly snapshots of the census. And of course pre-census it will be even more valuable. So please add your ancestral villages now! nell

I added data to this website a year ago & have also subsequently changed email address. The only way I have found to change is to go to each record and change the address in the comments box. I can't find a way of altering my registration but I don't think that matters as it's not used for contacts. I also took the opportunity to add a few more ancestors! So come on everyone, KEEP ADDING!!! Gillian

Just looked in to A V. I see a difficulty in that there seems no way to alter one's personal details. When I registered with them was BBB (Before BroadBand) so it recognises my old email address and I had to re-register with my new one. Anyone looking at my previous entries and trying to get in touch with me would not be able to.

I added one of mine about a year ago. Have just been back and there is one other name (not related) on there. I wish that the form was not so complicated. Could it please be simplified, so you just have name, dob-dod and family. I cant remember all the details of each ancestor and its a pain looking back and forth.

So feedback so far is 'GOOD SITE needing more entries from visitors' so I say GO there and put at least one relative on any village that is important to you. It will only take a minute or two and will encourage others to do the same. It need only be the one - you don't have to put the lot! But give this site a helping hand - IT'S FREE and run by people who are genuinly interested. Simon (and for any cynics - I get nothing for giving the site a plug)
