Try the IGI at FamilySearch if you are looking for births and marriages. Also have a look at British Origins (no births for England, Wales and Ireland on there, though). And Family History Online is good for some counties, for example Somerset. As for censuses, Britain didn't have them nationally before the 19th century and before 1841 they didn't have names etc. on them anyway, but I think there is some kind of Suffolk one from the 18th century on ancestry. The National Archivist website has death duty indexes from 1796. Apart from that, there are very few records which are complete for the entire country. Parish records are organised by parish, taxes are organised by hundred (or equivalent), wills by church courts. Many of these records have been indexed, but the indexes are not necessarily online, and even where they are, you rarely have access to the original image. Documents Online is an exception, but it only contains a small fraction of all probate material.

Just wondering if anyone knows wether there are any sites with records between 1086 ( this is covered by the domesday book which is online) and the 1800's, I have noticed records in the 1700's but these are only for york i think it was. I am also looking for records after 1901, I thought I'd got lucky as I found census 1700's - 1930 but then found out it was an american site.
