Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. My grnadad was a special policeman in the war in Bradford, West Yorkshire. I was wanting to find out why he became a speical as no-one in the family knows and whether there would be any records. He was supposedly attacked with an axe at one point while on duty and we wondered whether there would be any reports of it. His name was joseph Henry Hillam. I would be grateful if anyone could help. I believe that records will be in the county records office, or with the relevant police force. nell

Special Police were civies who not being able to fight owing to being unfit or war work. So I would also try and find out what other work he did.
