You have not given dates though I guess gggg.... is a fair way back. Based on the fact that we are going back to 1800 maybe late 1700s then you really do need to know the town or department that the person came from. Taking a quick look at the IGI the name Vignal occurs repeatedly in the Ardèche départment which is situated in the Central region of France. IF you are able to confirm that your ancestor came from that départment then you could write to the archive in Privas for further information. Just for interest in the 90-odd dépts for the years 1891-1915 there were 947 births with the surname Vignal of which 124 were in the Ardèche dépt. and 174 in the Gard. The rest were scattered through the country. Now with that number 100 years after the dates I think interest you it can be assumed that numbers were much lower and concentrated. Ardèche and Gard are both south central to south-west France with the highest numbers of Vignal. Should you find your ancestor came from elsewhere then you can write to the archive of the dépt concerned or the Town Hall of the relevant town, or if you have a few bob or € then a researcher can be easily found. IF you speak French then you could Google.fr for Vignal généalogie - you never know.

What do you know about them? When did Louis marry your relative? Have you got them on a census? Do you have a birthplace in France to start with? You could see how they got here/did they apply for naturalisation etc. My husband's great-aunt married a Frenchman and we have a lot of info including French identity card and photos of him with his first wife & child (we assume), plus his war record etc. In fact we have more documentation for him than we do for the aunt! nell
