Thank you all. i have phoned the place in Scotland. It apparently costs £30 now to find the records and there is no way of knowing if I have the right man until i have sent for them... Finger's crossed Alice

Alice, If he was in the army until the late 20's or even 30's his records will still be held by the MOD, not at Kew. Ian

This is from www.army.mod.uk/contacts/divisions/records.htm Army Personnel Records Enquiries about information from Army personnel records should be made to the appropriate address below: Officers or Soldiers whose regular or reserve service ended between 1921 and 1997 Army Personnel Centre HQ Secretariat Historical Disclosures Mail Point 400 Kentigern House 65 Brown Street Glasgow G2 8EX I believe it costs about £25 and takes a few months. You have to be either the next of kin to the soldier or have the next of kin's permission. nell

Having got my Grandfather's army number from his medal card I would like to apply for his service record. Does anyone know what the rules are? I know he was in the army until the late 1929's early 30's perhaps.. Also how can I be sure it is him? I am guessing - the name is correct and he lived in Lewisham Kent and it is the West Kent regiment - I could provide an address and next of kin - would the powers that be check all those details before sending the records? Greatful for any help Alice
