Thanks everyone. The ages are only slightly out, which is nothing unusal. She is only listed as wife. I have found the marriage for Selina to John Warner and sent for cert, incase another middle name helps. I also think i've found Grandad, was possibly looking in wrong area Southwark, not Strand, and sent for his birth to see if it is him, if that comes back Selina too or same add I'll be happy. Jan

To answer my own question, John Warner is the head of household in both 1881 and 1891 with Elizabeth listed as wife in 1891, so it doesn't say she is anybody's mother. Selina's birthplace in 1881 was Pancras, but Elizabeth's in 1891 is just given as London, Middlesex, so not much help there. Elizabeth's age in 1891 looks like 36 and Selina's in 1881 was 29 so they don't quite match, but women often 'lost' a few years from their age on the census. It's hard to say if it's the same person or not. Kate.

Does the 1891 census have the 'mother' as head of household with the child named as her son, or is she just the head's wife and the child his son? If the second, she could just be his stepmother. Kate.

Are the ages and places of birth the same for women on the census? Is she still around in 1901?..... Alice

All too often Jan. A lot of my rellies used a different name at each census. I'm fortunate if it's their middle name they're using rather than one they prefer or a nickname! Is there any chance Selina could be the middle name or even Elizabeth as the middle name? Sarah x

On 1891 census I found my grandfathers family living in Southwark, with him and other siblings including sister Daisy Warner. Mother named as Elizabeth. I sent for Daisys birth cert as I cannot find his. Dated 1884 and the add given is 19 Vere st, Strand, mother Selina. Looking at the 1881 census the family although fewer are living at 19 Vere st, Strand, but mother is still named as Selina not Elizabeth. Do you think it is safe to assume they are the same, and why would she use different names, as I believe they are the same mothers. Has anyone else experienced this? Jan
