Hi, Try contacting a lovely woman by the name of Margaret Drummond at www.scotsconnected(.)com she has her own we-site for adoptees and their birth familes. Did both adoptions take place in Scotland, I could give you a little information had they been in England, but if both are in Scotland contact Margaret as this is her level of expertise :O) And you are correct in your assumption that the births would be registered under their birth name, not their adoptive name. Not sure if Barnadao's would be able to help as your friend is not the adoptee, could be worth a try though. Wish them luck with this search. Sheila

Bridget I am not sure how the adoption laws work in Scotland. In this country you get registered on the adoptions register under your adopted name. There is still the original birth registration under the birth name. There is no way of connecting these unless you are the adopted person. You need to see the bit about adoptions on the Genealogy Resources section on the homepage. Plus, I suggest you contact Barnados HQ and ask if they can help as they would have the original paperwork. nell

Hi can anyone help, I have a friend whose mother was adopted and his grandfather (his dad's side) was also adopted from Dr Barnados. My friend doesnt know much about his grandfather other than his name Gordon Fern Young and that he died when he was 3yrs (83/84). He says he was scottish. What sites are there for finding births/deaths/marriages in Scotland as I havent been able to find his death in order to find his age. I assume when children are adopted they still get registered in their adoptive names? How can I try and help him trace his grandfather's other family? How does it work as I have no idea, does he have any rights to look at the file of his grandfather who is dead? any help getting me started for him will be very much appreciated. Bridget
