Date of earliest family photographs?

Does anyone know about what date photographs became common in families...need to date an ancestor! Joan

Don't go by how common it was - go by the clothes the person was wearing and if there's a photographer's stamp on the photo, see if you can find him in business in a directory and see how long he was operating at that address. Your local library should have at least one book which has info about fashions and dates. There's also this link: www*rogerco*freeserve*co*uk/index*htm replace * with . which has a Date a Photo section. Generally the earlier the photo in my family, the more formal the occasion. After about 1900, they tend to be privately taken, though still at obviously significant events, rather than snapshots. These were much more likely around the 1stWW - my grandfather had photographic equipment and took lots of pictures of Belgium in wartime as well as family photos. nell
