I have taken Charles Cherry's family back to the 1851 census and it was sooo easy! Trouble is i think I could have fallen at the first hurdle. I have the marriage certificate for his son Henry to Hilda Smith(!) Charles is listed as a bootmaker. Chasing back on the census his occupation is correct in 1901 with Henry aged 6. However in 1891 i have him with his Fathers family and he is aged 17 and listed as an office boy. This is the family I have chased back - trouble is is it the right one?. in 1881 his brother George is a Pressman in the shoe fatory - Dad is an engine fitter. My Charles called his first son Henry - same name as this Chales' father. Guess if I but certificate I will answer two questions - fingers crossed I have not been wasting muy time - For once the Smiths have proved more straightforward than the Cherrys! Alice |

I think it's the right one. I can't find another to fit his details. Did you see his brother William on the same page in 1881? He's a shoemaker. A few doors down as a boarder. I think you probably need to splash out on the cert to confirm both their details :) |

Don't worry , occupations do change , I have one who changes from a Coal merchant to a German Tutor and back again! Perhaps he worked in the shoe makers office chasing payments before he learnt the trade! Kim |

Yep , i think I will have to buy the certificate as it will answer two questions. At least I can't see any more likely Cherrys so I guess it is him. Thanks for your help - i don't think I'll go to Leicester in search of parish records just yet.... Alice |
