The prayer for the dying said at executions

Daniel The Prayer for the Dying is in the Book of Common Prayer I think. It is not the same as the lovely poem quoted here by Laird and Lou. It is many years since I went to Church, so cannot remember exactly what it says, but it is along the lines of begging mercy for all sins and going to the Lord with a clean conscience. It is NOT, incidentally, the same as the Prayer for the Dead, which is something else again! Perhaps you could nip into your local Church and have a look? Marjorie

Oh yes! Wont read it all if you don't mind or I'll be in tears again!

The Serenity Prayer God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Is that the one you remember?

Hi Daniel If I'm thinking of the same one (and not one specific for executions!) I thought I had it somewhere cos it was read at my sister's funeral. I THINK it's called Prayer for the Dying - The Serenity Prayer, try googling and see whether that throws anything out unless someone else has any other ideas! Lou

Got a newspaper artice from 1886. It describes the hanging of a man for the murder of his wife. It is written that he was read the Prayer for the dying. Does anyone know where I can find out what was said? Thank you
