Thanks for your response Kath, The certificate is anxiously awaited. I hope it will give me a clue as to the next avenue of research. Penny.

Kay Thank you for the information regarding legal adoption. It seemed unlikely that she could have been adopted by a friend, as I was told, but now that you have explained that legal adoption did not come into being until 1928, I suspect that it was quite common. Thanks Penny

Thanks for your response. I am waiting to receive a copy of the birth certificate. I found what I believe to be her registration of birth, right year, right quarter, right name but - registration district Wantage! Where's that? I'm going to look it up, but I thought it was in Oxfordshire. Way out of the usual places my ancesters haunted. Perhaps she was sent there in disgrace to have an illegitimate child. Thanks again for any advice you can offer, having trawled through these message boards I'm surprised you have time to do anything else.

Did you order the birth certificate with the reference you found on 1837online? If not, then if you order it, you will get the mothers first name and if she was old enough, you may be able to find her on the 1901 census with her family. Even if she was not old enough to appear on the 1901 census, if there is an address on the certificate her family may have still been there in 1901, although you would be lucky if this was the case. My mother was adopted by her natural mother's best friend. She was born on the 28th September 1920, I found her on 1837, registered as Dorothy Burton, mother's maiden name also Burton. I think the adoption was 'legalised' some years later when my mother was told that she was an adoptee. Was there a new ruling regarding adoption certificates or some such thing? How can I find out about Miss Burton, close friend of my mother's adopted mother, Winifred Day (nee Eldon). It seems to have been a family secret and there's no-one left to ask.
