If you order from the register office which covers Widnes rather from the GRO you wont need the GRO ref numbers . Tell them that you are looking for the certificate of William Bruce born about 1874/1875 with the parents names, and occupation that you found on census they probably will be able to find the one you want for just the £7 fee. I've found local offices very helpful and they are usually a bit more creative than the GRO in interpreting search criteria eg they will spot variations on names and occupations given as a checking point whilst GRO tend to reject if not exact matches. If you know the parents' names you can use them as a check for ordering the cert. If its the right cert you will get it for £7. If its the wrong cert you will get £4 back. nell

Yes. One of his sister's is my Grandmother, and I know the names of the family members from the census, so I thought that I would try and track each one from birth. Think I'm having a bad hair day or something

I am looking for my Great Uncle, William Bruce, the only info I have is that he was born c 1875 in Widnes Lancs/Cheshire ( never know where the boundary is ) . I have found three likely lads; two born Dec quarter 1874 in Prescott and one born Sep quarter 1875 in Prescott. Other than sending for three certificates, does anyone know how I can check and see which one is mine? Thank you everyone, your advice has really helped
