Criminal ancestors

Have just found a brother of an ancestor went to Reading gaol in 1850 for 'assault with intent to ravish' - do you reckon this would be attempted rape? and are local newspapers likely to have any more details at that time?

Thanks Mandy - he only got 6 months and a fine which is why I doubted it a bit - it wasn't that harsh in those days then. David

There's a great site called The Proceedings of the Old Bailey 1674-1834. Type in your chosen surname and you will see all cases where someone of that surname was involved, whether as victim, witness, character reference, or perpetrator. Obviously only deals with cases in the vicinity, but quite fascinating. Some of the punishments were quite harsh. Liz

Gosh David he was let off light I have just been having a look at some of the convicts who were transported to Australia crimes and one of them got life for assaulting his army officer and one for rape got 8yrs and another for attempting to rape a child under 10 only got 7 yrs so no rhyme or reason it seems ,Lara P. S was he an Owen David as I have them in my tree too?

June - I think (but not sure) that court records can be viewed at the local records office to the court but i'll find out soon :) Lara - I thought it was a bit lenient too which is why I wanted to read the circumstances! No he was a Rolfe not an Owen:)

David, going from my experience, the report would be in the records office, maybe in a local newspaper too. Hope you find it. Joy
