It has to depend on which dockyard.... I have several ancestors working in Portsmouth's HM Dockyards. While I have yet to locate apprenticeship records, I do have the dates they entered as apprentices, their position, wages etc and can follow them through until the day they died. These records are at TNA, Kew. There may well be others at the dockyards themselves.

Mine were shipwrights in London and possibly Bristol. Would be very interested to hear if anyone finds anything. Maz. XX

I've got shipwrights and carpenters working at Devonport, Portsmouth and Chatham! If anyone should come across a Moyes in any of these places he's mine! Maggie

I found 2 sites very useful for getting my ancestors apprenticeship records in London Dockland area. Try 'parishregister(.) (com)' for loads of useful links around the country, I believe. Also 'eolfhs.org.uk' East of London Family History Society is a great site for watermen, bargemen etc.
