Prize Money 1653

This should prove quite interesting. It seems that the William and John was a merchant ship with 36 guns which took part in the 1st Anglo-Dutch War and was at the battles of Gabbard and Sheveningen in 1653. Also involved, along with two other ships, in the seizure in the James River, Virginia, of the Golden Lion which arrived there from Amsterdam in February 1652. I presume that's where the prize money comes in. Now all I have to do is prove the family connection! And find out when, where and how Nathaniel died.

Brian I meant the William & John not the William & Mary. William & Mary are some of my ancestors lol! It does mention 'prize money' as well. Debby

That's useful: any more suggestions for sources?

Brian Just googled Captain Nathaniel Jesson and there's quite a bit of info - the William & Mary was an English ship in fleet operations during the first Anglo Dutch war! HTH Debby

Courtesy of Linda, who last night sent me information on a £500 gratuity paid to the widow of Captain Nathaniel Jesson (dec'd) of the ship William and John, for the support of her, her children and his parents, out of 'Monies arising from Prize Goods'. It sounds as if he maybe captured a ship but was killed in the process. Where can I get more info. on him, the William and John, any action (it doesn't say HMS, so maybe it was a privateer), and what wars were going on at that time?
