Or as John is Scottish, maybe they were in Scotland?

David Baxter, the son, is on the 1900 still in WI. Perhaps David Snr had died by then? I don't mean to dishearten you, but it is a fair way to go from WI to NY.... have you any idea as to why Elizabeth may have gone to NY and left her family behind in WI? Chloe

Could you list the Baxter family on the 1880 you think you might have found?? Have you checked whether or not they came back to England during the periods of the censuses 1890 (don't think the US 1890 survives) and 1900??

already had a few threads about these and gota bit further thanks to some kind people, does anyone have any ideas what to try now? john L anderson b 22 oct 1856 saline fife scotland married elizabeth baxter in manhattan new york 22 april 1889 according to the igi parents of john: david anderson and margaret livingstone, married 1853 at saline parish. all i know about elizabeth is she was born in cumberland and her parents were david baxter and may or may dixon. i have a possible baxter family on 1880 Us census so believe john and elizabeth met in the US althogh there is no trace of john and elizabeth or her parents on 1891/1901 US census. any ideas where to look now? leanne x
