.....come back to England and then disappear off the face of the Earth?

I have a Moses Stillwell in my family. He was born in Surrey about 1838. I wonder if anyone can explain his movements after that? He married an Irish wife and they had 4 children between 1861 and 1867 all born Cape of Good Hope. He was in Wandsworth with wife and children for the 1881 census - A timber dealer. At this time there were other related Stillwells in the area. T Then I seem to lose the family entirely. I wonder why they went overseas in the first place, and then where they all disappeared to? May the children have stayed in England but lied about their birthplace for some reason? Can anyone help explain?

I also have a family with childen born at the Cape (and in Canada). Could be your relative, like mine, was serving in the army - first in Ireland where he met his wife and then at the Cape?

Hello Judith Thank you for your help. I suppose he could have been in the army - how would I be able to find out? Alice
