I've just had a look at the IGI & there is a William Barker christened in Cheadle with a mother Ellen the day after he was born. I know this one has nothing to do with my lot, I just wish I could find my William. I'll still try the Chelsea Reg Office, just incase. Vivienne

Vivienne There has got to be a mistake somewhere in the index. What I suspect has happened is that when the original handwritten indexes were typed up, Cheadle was misread as Chelsea. This may even have happened in the original index. The reason William doesn't show up in my list is that the page number is shown as 25, not 15! Talk about compunding the error!

Hi All Just realised I got so confused with Roy disapearing & there being no Barkers on the list Brenda found that I forgot to say Thank You for the replys Thank you all very much Vivienne

What happened to Roy? I took ages writing that reply & when I get back he's gone. Now Brenda, sorry but thats confused me even more. The birth cert they sent me was for a William Barker, mothers name Ellen, informant Ann Bunt [Aunt] Cheadle 17 15. No father The fiche says [and I checked at my local library] Chelsea 17 15. I'm hoping that if I contact Chelsea they will say that only the vol is wrong on the fiche & they have my 2xgt Uncles birth cert. What I can't understand is why you didn't come up with a Barker on your list. Vivienne PS Just looked at your list again & maybe the informants name is Brunt not Bunt

Ah Roy, therein lies the rub, According to the birth cert I believe to be my gt grandfathers His name is RICHARD EDMUND On his first marriage he is RICHARD On his second marriage he is EDWIN RICHARD On the 1871/1881/1891 census he is Richard & on the only death cert that fits he is Richard but I have no way to be sure this is him as the informant was the steward of Kensington Infirmary. I was hoping brother Williams birth cert would tell me if I am right or wrong with his birth cert. I am sure about the marriage certs Thats clear to me I hope it's clear to you Vivienne

Hooray for freebmd. I think this is your answer: Births Sep 1837 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bagnal Female Cheadle 17 15 BRUNT Enock Cheadle 17 15 COPE Male Cheadle 17 15 FOWLER William Cheadle 17 15 GOODWIN Female Cheadle 17 15 Holmes Smith Cheadle 17 15 PERKIN Hannah Cheadle 17 15 Williamson William Cheadle 17 15 ie: not Chelsea but Cheadle. Bear in mind that the original registers would have used roman numerals. It is hard to mistake III for XVII.

HI Vivienne, so glad you hadn't gone away! I would try the local office, perhaps by 'phone and explain your predicament! I've found my local office to be very helpful in looking for certs. They don't need the GRO ref just the year and quarter (and names of course!). If you ask nicely they'll probably even check the father's name before dispatching it! Good Luck, Jenny x

I have been trying to find the birth of my gt grandfathers brother to confirm parentage. I thought I had found him but when the cert arrived there was an error on the fiche & it was wrong. His name is WILLIAM BARKER & according to which census you look at he was either born in Westminster or Windsor. The name on the index is WILLIAM BARKER -1837 sept qtr district Chelsea & this is where it goes wrong vol, 17, pg 15. Vol 17 is apparently Cheshire. Everything else seems right but GRO say they can't help. Do you think if I try Chelsea reg I might have any luck? Sorry thats taken so long Vivienne
