Thomas Purcells occupation is Land Steward on the marriage cert, I know no more about Joan Purcell or where she came from, although I have noticed while searching the name, quite a few are from Ireland, so I wonder if she may have been there during the 1901 census, but do not know how to follow this up?

It's not unusual to find people concealing an illegitimacy by giving a father's name on a marriage certificate. They often quote the biological father's christian name if they know it, but give him the same surname as their own. Charles (surname unknown) may be the real father or the step-father. If no father's name appears on Percy's birth certificate, this suggests that John has died or he and Clara have parted.

Thankyou for that, this is where I start to wonder whats what , on the Birth cert I got for Percy Simpkin, his mother is Clara Simpkin, no father is mentioned but a Clara Benson Married a John Simpkin in 1892 in Morley Yorkshire, if this is her, then why is Percivals father named as Charles on his marriage cert? thankyou for any help

Tammany, Is Joan Purcell called Joan on every subsequent document that mentions her? Joan was fairly unusual as a Christian name at that period and there are not that many about. There are certainly no births of any Joan Purcells in a period where freebmd is supposedly complete. There are a couple of Joannas, but they are several years younger. Did Joan have any brothers or sisters? Does Thomas have a distinctive occupation? Nobody is showing up with Joan as a second name either. Do you have any clues as to whether Joan came from the Harrogate area or if she just happened to be living there when she married?

I have a marriage cert from the 31st March 1921 between JOAN PURCELL aged 23 years, whose father was THOMAS PURCELL, and PERCIVAL SIMPKIN aged 26years whose father was CHARLES SIMPKIN, the marriage took place at St Roberts R c church in Harrogate, Knaresborough. However I havent been able to find any of these people on the 1901 census, and wondered if Im unlucky or am missing something? I have found a PERCY SIMPKIN 0n the 1901 census, in Knaresborough, but he was 4 years then, he was living with a family as a 'nursechild' and on his birth certificate there is no fathers name, so this is as close as I have got to finding out if these people are my grandparents. Any tips to where I might be going wrong of advise would be greatly appreciated
