Blacksmith or Barge builder - what are the links?

I have a rellie who was a blacksmith . In 1851, two of his sons are not surprisingly blacksmiths. Later both of them become barge builders. Does anyone know how these two trades are linked? Would you need similar skills. the family concerned lived in Surrey. Alice |

Tut tut Sarah Both wear shoes. Seriously I have seen the same thing and I guess the answer is that they both work with steel and many blacksmiths have also converted to many jobs - wheelwrights, shipwrights etc., barge is not so different. |

Thank you all for your help I have been on Ancestry all night chasing the brothers in the family. Just found the last one - a saywer and timber dealer. one of his sons a Whitesmith - presumeably they waere still connected to barge building - supplying the wood etc? Alice |
