Lee, GRO BMD registers are only from July 1837 prior to that you have to rely on Parish Registers. People didnt generally move too far as this was prior to railways etc., so if you know the Parish, town, village etc ., where he/she came from you could go to the local county archive and you may strike lucky if you are unable to find it on the IGI. One other thing about this is that if the birth was about 1800 then there is a chance that the death occurred after June 1837 and that could give you a lead if it has age and area etc.,

Thanks Louise and Helen Just tried that, great thanks I wanted to order another certificate while I was doing this but it says you cant order for any years before 1837, Im looking for a birth 1800 how do I find these details if you cant order a certificate. Ive looked on all the obvious places, but because its a common name there are loads of possible parents, any advice??

Lee I always order online here: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ But you will need to have the GRO index reference which you can get from their indexes either on Freebmd or 1837online or on microfiche at various libraries/records offices. The cert will cost £7. If you can't get the ref, then it would be £11.50 for them to search a 3-year-period. If you know where the event took place you can apply to the local register office. Birth cert info gives the names (including mother's maiden name) of both parents, father's occupation and the date and place of birth as well as the address of the informant (informant is usually a close relative, and often the mother or father). Marriage cert will give bride and groom's names and possibly their ages, though often it just says 'of full age'; both groom's father and bride's father's names and occupations, addresses of bride & groom at the time of marriage (though this is often just a village name or a convenience address for the purposes of having the banns read). Marriage certs sometimes have useful info in that the witnesses on a cert are often close relatives. nell
