Hi Judy, thankyou. after trawling the igi i came up with that family too. which means they must have travelled to america between 1868 and 1870 if oldest son age 12 born in england and youngest being 10 born in wisconsin?! im assuming they're mine for now! i'd be a rubbish detective!! LOL thanks for your help Bill, i dont have a year of birth for elizabeth but my john L anderson was 32/33 when they married in new york. i wonder if all or some of his family moved to america or if he went by himself? aaaah! thanks again everyone leanne (with a sore head) x

Hi Leanne FreeBMD has the marriage of David BAXTER, and one of the spouses is a Mary DIXON, at Longtown, which includes Arthuret: Marriages Dec 1858 BAXTER David Longtown 10b 553 DIXON Mary Longtown 10b 553 JOHNSTON Jane Longtown 10b 553 MILLER George Longtown 10b 553 --- The IGI has four children listed for David BAXTER and Mary at Arthuret: 1. ELISABETH BAXTER - Gender: Female Christening: 19 SEP 1860 Arthuret, Cumberland, England 2. JOHN BAXTER - Gender: Male Christening: 05 OCT 1862 Arthuret, Cumberland, England 3. JANE BAXTER - Gender: Female Christening: 25 SEP 1864 Arthuret, Cumberland, England 4. MARY ANN BAXTER - Gender: Female Christening: 07 NOV 1869 Arthuret, Cumberland, England -- I have not been able to spot the family on the 1881 Census for England, Canada or the US with a 20 year old Elizabeth nor on the 1871 Census Index for England, which is available at Ancestry.co.uk through the National Archives: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census/. If you could get someone on the Records Board with access to Ancestry for the US census records you could ask them to check for the BAXTER's and John and Elizabeth ANDERSON in 1910 or later. The census will also give you the year they emigrated. FreeBMD also has a couple of the births, which correspond to the christenings above: Births Sep 1860 BAXTER Elizabeth Longtown 10b 176 -- Births Sep 1862 BAXTER John Longtown 10b 5__ -- Hope this helps. All the best with your research. Kind regards and God bless you, Lynne x

> If you have a birthyear for Elizabeth you should be able to > find her birth cert from the GRO indexes or Freebmd Perhaps, there seem to many births 'missing' from the on-line civil registry indexes for Cumberland. There are many people I can see in the Cumberland census for which there are simply no civil registry index entries, no matter how creative I am with spellings and locations etc. The best bet is probably the England 1861/71 censuses for an initial location and if found there, then approaching the Civil Registry for Cumberland, in Carlisle to see if they have a birth record. In 1871 there is an Elizabeth Baxter age 8 months in Kirkbampton (where my Bolton relatives come from), and an Elizabeth F. Baxter, age 3, in Carlisle. The next youngest Elizabeth Baxter is age 13 at Corney, and after that the ages are probably too old to resonably considered for a first marriage in 1889. Do you have an age for your Elizabeth when she married? Cheers, Bill Sydney, Australia

Problem here is that you do not know the age of Elizabeth though believe that she was born Cumberland. Between her birth and marriage in N York is a BIG blank as her family may have moved shortly after her birth, she may have moved when she became of 'an age'. She MAY have met John in Scotland and they then decided to migrate, the entire Baxter family may have migrated and Elizabeth met John in N York OR OR Think what you should do is find the passenger list(s) for the ship(s) on which they would have sailed with departure from Glasgow or Liverpool, I guess, into New York some time up to 1889. IF they had waited bit longer it would have been easy on the Ellis Island site but regret you have to Search! The Ships mandate will give you information as to their ages which would help with the problem of finding them on bmd - and may also show whether they travelled alone or not. If you looked at the Brit 1881 census you will have seen that there were a few Elizabeth Baxters who may have been candidates for wife of John - but then we dont really know if she was in England at that time (may have been Scotland or N York !).

You should be able to find Elizabeth and her parents on the 1881 census in either America or England. If you have a birthyear for Elizabeth you should be able to find her birth cert from the GRO indexes or Freebmd. nell
