OK, Chris. I'm chilled. Just now trying to find a possible asylum where my ancestor might be on the 1841 in Lambeth - but then again he might well have died by then too.

Thanks Louise and Lou. I just wanted to be clear on it, that's all. PS - given me an idea to possibly check any asylums on the 1841 census in Lambeth (have father of someone who isn't with his family on the 1841, and whose wife married very shortly after the 1841 - date unknown though)

Yes - Hatters were people who made hats. They used mercury as part of hat making process which was poisonous and one of the symptons was insanity. Hence the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland. Louise
